Just north of downtown Sausalito
along Richardson Bay is where you'll find the various arks and
houseboats which give Sausalito yet another dimension. Floating homes have been a
Sausalito tradition for over a century. Originally summer
homes and weekend retreats for San Franciscans, Sausalito
houseboats are no longer merely accommodations with a view. These
homes offer a truly unique lifestyle for those with a penchant
for water living. The sense of community found here can't be
matched.
These colorful
houseboats come in an array of architectural styles and sizes
ranging from simple cottages to ornate palaces. Sausalito is
home to about 400 houseboats, making it one of the largest
floating home communities on the San Francisco Bay. Originally
true "boats", today's floating homes are permanent stationary
structures connected to city utilities and subject to real
estate taxes.
