In Spanish, Corte Madera means “cut
wood.” As part of the original land grant, Corte Madera del
Presidio, the area was a large supplier of wood for the
building of the Presidio in San Francisco. Marin's first post
office and the first railroad station between Sausalito and
San Rafael were also located in Corte Madera.
In the late nineteenth century many San Franciscans visited Corte Madera during
the summer months and enjoyed camping on Christmas Tree Hill.
Many of these same families moved in for good after the 1906
earthquake and fire.
Modern
day Corte Madera, incorporated in 1916, is a beautiful city
boasting two lovely outdoor malls, beautiful scenery and
fantastic restaurants. It is also home to a thriving
farmers market every Wednesday from June through October.
