Originally, Novato was made up of three large land grants,
Rancho de Novato, Olompali, and Ignacio. Rancho de
Novato, where most of the present city of Novato is situated,
was granted to Fernando Feliz in 1839. It was eventually
sold to Francis DeLong. Olompali was granted to a Native
American, Camilo Ynitia. This rancho was home to the
Miwok Indians and was a major trading center. Currently,
Olompali is a State Historic Park containing a re-created
Miwok village. The southern land grant, including Ignacio,
Hamilton Field and Bel Marin Keys was originally granted to
Ignacio Pacheco. His descendants still reside in the old
Pacheco home.
The city of Novato is the northernmost city in Marin County.
Novato is a very diverse city that includes historic homes and
neighborhoods, waterfront communities and plenty of open
space. Shopping includes many of the larger retail stores as
well as the fun boutiques along Grant Avenue in “Old Town.”
Incorporated in 1960, it is comprised of 43 square miles and
3,500 acres of open space.
