Incorporated
in 1874, San Rafael is the seat of County Government for Marin
County and Marin’s oldest, largest and most culturally
diverse city. In 1817, Mission San Rafael Arcangel, the angel
of bodily healing, was established as an asistencia hospital
to treat the sick Indians from Mission San Francisco de Asis.
Today, a replica of the original mission with a museum, gift
shop and self-guided tours, attracts many visitors. It can be
found on 5th Avenue between Court and B Street.
For
connoisseurs of great food, San Rafael offers unique dining
experiences with restaurants as diverse as its residents.
Lovers of the outdoors will surely enjoy China Camp, a former
Chinese shrimping village, transformed into a 1,600-acre state
park with hiking trails and overnight campsites. For history
and architecture buffs, the Marin County Historical Society
Museum, the Falkirk Cultural Center, 106-year-old Dominican
College, and the Marin County Civic Center deserve a visit.
